Ron said something that struck me. We were talking about our peers and our futures and how some of us are more fortunate than others (in terms of salary). I think he was trying to say that we’re fortunate because we know what direction we want to take in terms of our career and our lives, and “if we ever wanted to by an Xbox 360 it wouldn’t set us back, unlike most other people our age” (I think he was referring to the non-engineering folks). I sheepishly agreed, not revealing how much in debt I was from all the furniture I had bought for my penthouse, the designer clothes I “had to have because it was SO of the moment,” the cool new gadgets, and those damn cats. Not to mention I don’t cook.
I evaluated my situation and I started wondering why do all my friends have so much extra spending money and I don’t? Three things:
- Penthouse. I think that pretty much says it all. I had to live at 1021 Clarendon with the hardwood floors, granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, and most importantly, the metro stop 1.5 blocks away. I wasn’t bargaining for a 10th floor unit with a view of the Monument and the Capitol, but it was the only available unit at the time I was looking. Needless to say, I’m paying WAY too much on rent.
- Fashion. I’m a girl and a slave to fashion and a whore to designer labels. But I am also a recovering shopaholic. At least, I think I am. Now I can’t say that none of my guy friends buy designer clothes, because that used to be true. They’re finally coming around and realizing the luxury they’ve been missing out on, but still, it’s not like they drop $1000 on a Chanel clutch (which I still refuse to return).
- Technology. I’m a nerd, a geek, and tool. And yes I have to have that 24″ widescreen monitor, the 50″ plasma, the Apple TV, Harman Kardon receiver, Apple nano and video iPods, Xbox 360 Elite, oh the list goes on and on. BMW 335xi. You get the idea.
So here’s the thing. If I was a guy and had some extra spending money, I would obviously go out and buy myself a new 360, without hesitation. But being a GIRL, I’ve got debate if I wanna spend $600 on a gaming console or a new pair of designer shoes. Or a new tote. Or a Dior watch. Or more clothes. See what I’m saying? I just have more needs and wants. I could either be a fashion faux pas or technology unsavvy, but unfortunately (or fortunately?) I’ve got the best of both worlds. If only I could afford it.
